Dickinson County
Dickinson County was formally organized in 1857 after pioneer settlement around the Iowa Great Lakes. Spirit Lake became the county seat, and the region’s lakes quickly shaped settlement, fishing, transportation, and recreation. The county is named for Daniel S. Dickinson, a New York lawyer and U.S. senator. Over generations, the Iowa Great Lakes developed into one of the Midwest’s best-known vacation areas while farming, small-town commerce, tourism, and local industry continued to support year-round communities.
Today, Dickinson County combines resort energy with everyday small-town life. Arnolds Park Amusement Park, West Lake Okoboji, Spirit Lake, beaches, marinas, golf, museums, trails, and conservation areas draw visitors throughout the year. Summer is the busiest season, but fishing, hunting, winter recreation, community events, schools, health care, and regional services keep the county active in every season.
