Johnson County

Johnson County was established in 1837 during the territorial era and quickly became central to Iowa’s early development. Iowa City was selected in 1839 as the territorial capital and remained the state capital until the government moved to Des Moines in 1857. The University of Iowa, founded in 1847, became a defining institution. Agriculture, river travel, railroads, education, medicine, commerce, and later technology and research helped shape the county into one of Iowa’s most diverse and dynamic regions.

Today, Johnson County mixes university-town energy with suburban growth, historic communities, natural areas, and working farmland. Iowa City is nationally known for literature, arts, health care, and the University of Iowa, while Coralville and North Liberty add shopping, entertainment, trails, recreation, and fast-growing neighborhoods. County parks, the Iowa River Trail, Hoover Trail, F.W. Kent Park, Coralville Lake, and Lake Macbride create extensive outdoor options.
