Humboldt County
Humboldt County was formed in 1857, with Dakota City chosen as the county seat. The county grew along the Des Moines River and across a landscape dominated by agriculture, small-town trade, rail connections, and river-powered early industry. Humboldt founder Stephen Taft envisioned a tree-filled river community, while later generations built institutions, fairs, parks, and businesses that remain central to local life. The county’s history also includes world-champion wrestler Frank Gotch and a distinctive PWA-era courthouse.
A visit can begin along the Des Moines River in Humboldt, where parks, trails, dams, bridges, and the Frank Gotch statue create an easy outdoor route through town. From there, follow the Three Rivers Trail, explore Frank A. Gotch Park, visit Dakota City’s courthouse, or head into the county’s smaller communities. Local restaurants, libraries, recreation facilities, fairs, museums, rural scenery, and community events make Humboldt County feel active without losing its relaxed small-town pace.

The West Fork of the Des Moines River runs through Humboldt and supports fishing, paddling, and riverfront recreation. Lake Nokomis Park has a concrete boat ramp and river views, while Tourist Park and Bicknell Park provide convenient river access. Humboldt County Conservation also promotes multiple river float routes.
Families can use Humboldt Recreation Center, a 70,000-square-foot facility with courts, track, fitness areas, pickleball, racquetball, Kids Zone, and special events. Outdoors, Taft Park offers Wildcat Wonderland playground, sports courts, a skate park, and open recreation space. The city aquatic center, library, parks, trails, and county fair add more options.
Humboldt County was formed in 1857, with Dakota City chosen as the county seat. The present courthouse was begun in 1939 and is a PWA-era building with Art Deco influence. Humboldt itself grew along the Des Moines River under founder Stephen Taft, whose early dam and milling projects helped establish the community. The county also preserves strong agricultural, railroad, fair, and wrestling heritage.
