Plymouth County

Plymouth County was established in the territorial era and formally organized before Le Mars became the county seat in 1872. Early settlement spread across prairie and river corridors, with agriculture, railroads, livestock, and small-town commerce driving growth. The current red-sandstone courthouse in Le Mars dates to the turn of the twentieth century, while communities across the county preserve strong German, Luxembourgish, rural, and pioneer traditions.

Today, Plymouth County combines agriculture and manufacturing with outdoor recreation, historic attractions, community festivals, and a growing visitor economy. Le Mars anchors the county with health care, shopping, dining, arts, education, and its famous ice cream identity. Hillview Recreation Area, Broken Kettle Grasslands, county wildlife areas, golf courses, trails, museums, and the Plymouth County Fair give residents and visitors a wide range of experiences throughout the year.
