Woodbury County
Woodbury County was established in 1851 as Wahkaw County and renamed in 1853 for Levi Woodbury, a U.S. Supreme Court justice and former cabinet official. The county seat moved to Sioux City in 1856, where Missouri River access and later rail connections drove rapid growth. Agriculture, industry, immigration, transportation, Native and Lewis and Clark history, and the Loess Hills all shaped a county that became a major economic and cultural center for the Siouxland region.
Start in Sioux City with the riverfront, public museum, art center, Lewis and Clark sites, historic courthouse, and downtown dining. Then head into the Loess Hills at Stone State Park and the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. Brown’s Lake, Snyder Bend, Southwood, and Little Sioux Park add camping, fishing, cabins, and quiet outdoor time. Beyond the metro, Woodbury County’s smaller communities reward visitors with local history, parks, shops, agriculture, and classic western Iowa scenery.

Start in Sioux City with the Sioux City Public Museum, Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, Sioux City Art Center, and the riverfront. Outdoors, visit Stone State Park, the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, Brown’s Lake, or Southwood Conservation Area.
The Loess Hills are steep ridges formed from deep deposits of windblown silt and are one of western Iowa’s defining landscapes. Stone State Park and the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center are two of the best county locations to experience prairie, woodland, overlooks, and wildlife.
Families can visit LaunchPAD Children’s Museum, the free Sioux City Public Museum, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, Stone State Park, Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, and riverfront parks and trails.
Stone State Park offers more than 15 miles of trails through the Loess Hills. The Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center has several miles of trails, Sioux City has an extensive urban trail system, and Southwood Conservation Area offers quieter rural hiking.
Woodbury County was created in 1851 as Wahkaw County and renamed in 1853 for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Levi Woodbury. Sioux City became the county seat in 1856 and grew into a Missouri River and railroad transportation center. Lewis and Clark history, Sergeant Floyd, railroads, immigration, industry, agriculture, and the Loess Hills all shape the county’s identity.
Sioux City is the county seat and largest city. Woodbury County has 15 incorporated communities: Anthon, Bronson, Correctionville, Cushing, Danbury, Hornick, Lawton, Moville, Oto, Pierson, Salix, Sergeant Bluff, Sioux City, Sloan, and Smithland.
Interstate 29 follows the county’s western edge and Sioux City river corridor. U.S. Highway 20 crosses east-west, and U.S. Highway 75 runs north-south through the metro. Iowa Highways 12, 31, 140, 141, and 175 also serve the county. Use 511 Iowa for current road conditions.
Visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, the Sergeant Floyd River Museum & Welcome Center, and the Sergeant Floyd Monument. Together they tell the story of the expedition’s 1804 passage through the area and Sergeant Charles Floyd.
