Wayne County

Wayne County was established on January 13, 1846 and formally organized in 1851. It was named for Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne. Corydon has remained the county seat throughout the county’s history, serving as the center of government and commerce. Agriculture, small-town trade, county institutions, rail-era development, and community traditions shaped the area, while local museums, historic buildings, and annual festivals continue to preserve that story.

Today, Wayne County offers a quiet mix of rural life and outdoor recreation. Bobwhite State Park, Corydon Lake Park, Lakeside Park near Humeston, Moore-Gosch Memorial Park, Seymour Lake Park, and Medicine Creek Wildlife Area provide camping, fishing, boating, hiking, swimming, and wildlife viewing. Corydon adds dining, shopping, the Prairie Trails Museum, parks, the aquatic center, and community events, while smaller towns maintain strong local traditions.
