Sioux County
Sioux County was formally organized in 1860. Its first county seat was Calliope, but a wave of Dutch immigration beginning in the late 1860s transformed the eastern part of the county. Orange City grew quickly, and after a famously intense county-seat rivalry, voters moved the seat there in 1872. Agriculture, faith communities, education, rail and highway access, and later manufacturing shaped the county into one of northwest Iowa’s strongest rural population centers.
A visit can begin in Orange City with Dutch architecture, Windmill Park, the courthouse, museum, shops, and Northwestern College. Sioux Center adds Dordt University, recreation trails, All Seasons Center, Siouxnami Waterpark, shopping, and a fast-growing business community. Sandy Hollow, prairie trails, county parks, Rock Valley, Hawarden, Hull, and smaller communities add outdoor recreation, festivals, local dining, and another layer of northwest Iowa life.
