Muscatine County

Muscatine County was established in 1836 along one of Iowa’s most important transportation corridors: the Mississippi River. The community that became Muscatine began as a trading post in 1833 and passed through the names Casey’s Woodpile, Newburg, and Bloomington before becoming Muscatine. River commerce, agriculture, lumber, manufacturing, and the pearl-button industry shaped the county’s growth, leaving a legacy visible in downtown architecture, museums, riverfront landmarks, and working landscapes.

Today, Muscatine County combines riverfront recreation and industry with farms, prairie, wetlands, parks, and small-town life. Muscatine offers museums, riverfront trails, restaurants, shopping, public art, and major employers, while West Liberty and Wilton contribute strong local traditions and historic destinations. County conservation areas such as Deep Lakes Park, Discovery Park, Saulsbury Bridge, and Cedar Bluffs provide camping, fishing, hiking, paddling, swimming, and nature study.
